Interbrand Recognizes Brand Leadership: Carolyn Ray, Managing Director, Interbrand Canada with Scott Haldane, President and CEO, YMCA Canada, recipient of the Interbrand World Changing CEO Award, and Dom Mercuri, EVP and CMO, TD Bank Group, recipient of the Interbrand Brand and Business Leadership Award, with Tom Zara, President, Interbrand New York
TORONTO, ON (November 13, 2015) – Interbrand Canada, the country’s leading global brand consulting firm, last night marked 15 years of service to clients, and recognized the contributions the many Interbranders who have shaped the profession of branding, at a celebratory event held at Toronto’s iconic TIFF Bell Lightbox. At the event, Carolyn Ray, Interbrand’s Managing Director in Canada, recognized TD Bank Group and YMCA Canada as examples of two brands that have endured the passage of time to thrive and create influence in the world.
“At no time in our lives have brands influenced behaviour more than they do now,” said Ray. “Brands are transforming business models, culture, politics and communities. This kind of change requires not only clear vision, but also people who understand the complexity of our world, have the courage to challenge the status quo and the ambition to change the world around them. As we look to the future, we are entering a new era where brands will need to evolve even faster – brands will need to operate at the speed of life.”
Interbrand Recognizes Contributions of Canadian Business Leaders
At the event, Interbrand recognized the success of two Canadian leaders: Scott Haldane, President and CEO, YMCA Canada and Dominic Mercuri, Executive Vice President and CMO of TD Bank Group.
“Both of these leaders recognize that brands have the power to change the world and build business value. Both TD and YMCA Canada have truly elevated our expectations of brands and businesses,” said Carolyn Ray, Managing Director, Interbrand Canada. “Under Dom’s leadership, TD has been ranked as the most valuable Canadian brand twice in the past four years. As CEO of YMCA Canada, Scott led the development of a national YMCA brand as a critical component of its strategic plan, building a stronger Canada.”
Scott Haldane, President and CEO, YMCA Canada, was presented with the inaugural Interbrand “World Changing CEO Award,” for his work creating a strong national YMCA brand, focused on building healthy communities, unifying the organization and impacting lives across Canada. In addition to his visionary leadership at the YMCA, Mr. Haldane’s accomplishments are far-reaching. He chaired the National Panel on First Nation Education for Elementary and Secondary Students Living on Reserve. He also founded and led the 4Rs Youth Movement, which brings together indigenous and non-indigenous young adults in a spirit of reconciliation. At the end of December, Scott will be retiring from the YMCA to take on the prestigious role as the first full-time President & CEO of the Rideau Hall Foundation.
“The YMCA has been my passion for well over 40 years, and it has been highly rewarding to steward the YMCA through a tremendous time of change and progress, requiring collaboration across all of our member associations to build a strong, national, consistent brand,” said Scott Haldane, President and CEO, YMCA Canada. “As a decentralized organization, the YMCA brand has been a powerful lever to ensure we are harnessing the power of our collective voice, helping us build healthy communities across Canada by aligning our employees, clarifying our purpose to diverse stakeholders and improving our influence where it is needed most.”
Dominic Mercuri, Executive Vice President and CMO, TD Bank Group, was presented with the inaugural 2015 Interbrand Brand and Business Leadership Award. Over his 23-year career at TD, he is best known for introducing the iconic green chair and building the comfort brand through the promise of ‘banking can be this comfortable.’ Under his leadership, TD has risen to the top of Interbrand’s most valuable brand ranking, and is recognized across North America for customer service, convenience and comfort. TD’s success is attributed to their unwavering commitment to the customer and creating connections that extend beyond financial advice. Their #TDThanksYou and #MakeTodayMatter campaigns are a prime example of their dedication to their customers and strong brand.
“It takes a great deal of collaboration, integration and hard work to build and develop a strong brand,” said Dominic Mercuri, EVP and CMO, TD Bank Group. “It is an honour to be recognized by Interbrand and I share this with a world-class team who support our business globally, as well as all our employees who bring passion and energy to the TD brand each and every day. At TD, we’ve built our brand by being focused on delivering legendary experiences to our customers. This has been our leading differentiator, something that has helped us grow as a brand both here in Canada and in new markets.”
