Perhaps it’s time for metal bands to start using different typefaces?

Wow. At least half of those are completely illegible. And I don't know what's worse: the font treatments or the names. Cephalic Carnage? Sexcrement? Putrid Pile? Boar Corpse? It reminds me of this great SNL skit: http://www.hulu.com/watch/113213/saturday-night-live-underground-festival

This is the most conformist anticonformist advertising I have ever seen....!

My face hurts from trying to read this, and I bet any of these bands would be quite pleased with that result.

@Jason well at least some proper latin roots are represented.

I love the fact that the sponsors' names and logos are almost identically over-the-top: Vader Cabinets (I presume Darth is making not kitchens but speakers), Old Cemetery Records, Gutter Christ productions -- good to see such lockstep alignment between art and commerce! From the folks who brought you Death Waffles.

Amazing poster. So many genres fall into this trap. And if it isn't the typeface, it's the band name. The Brooklyn sandbox includes: Beach Fossils, Beaches, Eternal Summers, Best Coast, Dunes, Air Waves, Wavves, Coasting, Sun Araw...that's a rather top of mind list from browsing Showpaper over the last few months (http://www.myspace.com/showpaper).

"Trap" probably isn't the right word. To be fair, it's more symbiotic. Shine a light on one band and you're bound to uncover other bands that share the same creative inclination. I doubt the naming is a conscious coattail ride.

How fun would it be to do a naming project for a metal band?! I would love to show them the competitive landscape and help them find the white space.
